Share-Net Digital Platform

Today, on #internationalwomensday, the Share-Net country hubs engage their members through various campaigns. Through this year’s theme #choosetochallenge, Share-Net members across the world show solidarity and commit to challenging gender bias and inequalities!

Around the world, women and girls are still not able to fully participate in all aspects of social, economic and political life. Globally, 129 million girls are out of school. 21% of girls are child brides. Women do the majority of unpaid work and still earn far less than men in every occupation. 1 in 3 women and girls worldwide experience violence against women in their lifetime. There is no country in the world that has actually achieved equality although gender equality is a human rights principle.

Only through equality, we can work towards a safe, just and sustainable future. It is not a choice to challenge the status quo, it’s a duty, a necessity! We have to keep fighting for equal rights for ALL women, day after day and year after year – not only on the 8th of March, but every day!

The 8th of March marks International Women’s Day 2021. In the context of COVID-19, this year’s theme “For an egalitarian future in the world of Covid-19” recalls the incredible efforts made by women and girls to shape a future and recovery without discrimination. Women are on the front lines in the face of Covid-19, as healthcare workers on the one hand, and forced to leave the labor market on the other. As national leaders, they have been the most exemplary and the most effective in the fight against COVID-19. In Burundi, the national theme “Female leadership, source of inclusive development” traces the major role played by women in the national economy. It represents 55.2% of the workforce and is active in the agricultural sector which provides 90% of food production. However, women’s demands remain numerous: the zero-rating of sanitary napkins, access to land, the thorny issue of inheritance, etc.

Jordan and the world are celebrating International Women’s Day today Monday, which happens to be on the 8th of March of every year. This year’s celebration goes under the slogan of “Women in Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a COVID-19 World” and under the hashtag #SheChoseToChallenge.

This day aims at celebrating the huge efforts women and girls make all over the world in creating a more equal future and recovering from the coronavirus pandemic, as women such as healthcare workers, caregivers and innovators are on the frontlines responding to the pandemic. This is also because women are the most model and effective national leaders in responding to this pandemic.

International Women’s Day is a global day marking the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of all women. Today, on the 8th of March 2021, we join the worldwide celebration of women’s achievements and create awareness about meaningful narratives, resources and activities that can help combat gender inequalities as we lobby for more inclusive societies.

We have created an overview document for you that provides

  • more information about our Share-Net Netherlands members’ and partners’ work on principal areas where sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and gender equality and women’s rights (GEWE) intersect such as menstrual health, reproductive justice, maternal health, HIV justice, child marriage and other themes
  • a selection of resources and online activities addressing feminism, gender equality and SRHR politically in the Netherlands and worldwide.

Download our Share-Net Netherlands’ IWD 2021 overview here.

Furthermore, the theme for this year is #choosetochallenge and throughout the day we will be sharing some of the ways our members #choosetochallenge inequality, call out bias, question stereotypes, and help forge an inclusive world.
