Climate Change and SRHR

CoP Overview and Introduction:

The United Nations found Bangladesh to be amongst the five most hazard-prone countries in Asia and the Pacific, according to its 2021 Regional Focus Model (RFM) on disaster vulnerability. It is crucial to identify and establish the linkage between climate change and SRHR in the context of Bangladesh, given the urgent need to understand and establish how gender and SRHR-related information and message could provide a positive impact to the huge number of women and young girls living at the risk of climate vulnerability. Particularly, policymakers, experts and donors who work in the area of climate change, often do not see this linkage. The objective of this CoP is to address this knowledge and information gap and translate the existing evidence, knowledge and research contributions to the policymakers.

CoP Objectives:

  • In the year 2022, the CoP members will draw on their knowledge, experience and expertise to produce knowledge product(s) focusing on ‘SRHR and Climate Change’. CoP members will necessarily connect climate change to different SRHR issues while developing the knowledge product.
  • In creating the knowledge product, the CoP members will work on addressing the intersectionality of SRHR and climate change, and translating the existing evidence, knowledge and research contributions to climate change and SRHR to the policymakers.
  • The knowledge product could follow various patterns, for example, reviewing existing literature on gender and climate change issues, studying the reality of rural women from flood‐prone, disaster‐prone and coastal communities, and key informant interviews with members of the health, water and sanitation and disaster management standing, discussions with climate change experts and review of national policies and legislation on women, health and climate change and then translating the existing knowledge to the policymakers.
  • Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), policymakers, entrepreneurs and academics in SRHR, development and climate change often operate in different communities with different programmes, where voices of the vulnerable and learnings from existing coping strategies are insufficiently taken into account. Through this CoP, we would bring all the existing knowledge and stakeholders together on climate change and SRHR and translate them to the policymakers under the same umbrella.
