Cordaid, Pharos, HealthNet TPO and MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières / NL Artsen Zonder
Grenzen) invite you to participate in the expert meeting on “the promotion of mental and
psycho-social health of refugees and migrants”. This meeting is organized in preparation
towards the Amsterdam summit on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Emergency
Settings on 7-8 October 2019.
The meeting will focus on the progress made with SDG 3 (on ensuring healthy lives and
promoting well-being for all at all ages), particularly regarding the physical and mental health
of refugees and migrants. Due to conflict, violence, persecution and the perilous journey they
have undertaken, refugees and migrants often suffer from mental health and psychosocial
complaints, including mental health disorders. This hinders their participation and integration
to (re)build an acceptable life in their new living environment.
The World Health Assembly has recently adopted a five-year Global Action Plan that addresses
the key actions needed for Mental Health & Psychosocial Support (MHPSS), both at home and
abroad. Minister Kaag (Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation) has also decided to
prioritize psycho-social and mental health care, not only for refugees and migrants but also
for their families and communities. On both domestic and international levels, it is important
to take stock of the current challenges and achievements, to identify bottlenecks and best
practices to feed into the upcoming Amsterdam summit.
This meeting will discuss the Dutch contributions to achieving SDG 3, in particular related to
access to psycho-social health services to refugees and migrants. What has been done so far,
and what should be the priorities for future Dutch investments? Which partners and
stakeholders could be part of this effort? The meeting will provide an important moment to
exchange views with a range of different stakeholders, and to formulate concrete
recommendations regarding the Dutch contributions.
Contributions to the meeting will be provided by, amongst others, Prof. Ivan Komproe
(HealthNet TPO), Joost van der Meer (AZG, tbc), Elize Smal (Pharos), Bob van Dillen (Cordaid),
Andrea Vonkeman (UNHCR) and Noor Cornelissen (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, tbc). The
meeting will be moderated by Paul Janssen.
