Position Summary

The U.S. Communications Manager works both independently and collaboratively to help develop and implement strategies to meet the Institute’s overall communications goals. This includes disseminating U.S. national and state policy analysis and research to our key audiences, thereby playing an important role in informing and helping to shape public debate on sexual and reproductive health and rights issues on an ongoing basis. The Communications Manager provides critical, substantive support to senior communications staff and helps design and carry out strategic plans that involve coordinating outreach efforts across various channels. With passion for sexual and reproductive health and rights, the Communications Manager will help us leverage the Institute’s body of work to make the case for evidence-based policies and, in particular, for addressing the needs of marginalized people.


  • Works closely with staff in the Institute’s New York and Washington DC offices to draft and facilitate review of news releases, social media content, talking points, infographics, opinion pieces and other materials
  • Bolsters the Institute’s media relations efforts, including identifying and engaging key national and state-level outlets and individuals covering health, science and policy through various channels
  • Assists in developing and disseminating materials for rapid response to scientific, policy and other developments
  • Identifies ongoing opportunities, such as relevant advocacy and awareness days, conferences and other events, to promote Guttmacher’s domestic work
  • Works with senior communications staff to manage projects and develop and implement outreach and engagement strategies
  • Assists in drafting and compiling highlights and data for internal updates, funder reports and presentations to the Guttmacher Board
  • Represents the Institute at relevant coalition meetings and conferences
  • Assists in managing social media platforms and posting/disseminating news releases and other materials as needed
  • Performs other job related tasks as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Journalism, Public Relations or related fields
  • Minimum of three to five years relevant work experience
  • Excellent communications skills and proven ability to write for different formats and platforms, including news releases, opinion pieces and social media
  • Strong media relations experience, in particular in areas of health and policy
  • Experience using Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms as key component of larger communications strategy
  • Familiarity with content management, email distribution and media database systems a plus
  • Ability to work efficiently under deadlines and juggle priorities and multiple projects
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a team
  • Proven track record communicating effectively on issues such as public health, reproductive health, and reproductive rights and justice
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus, but not required
  • Passion for sexual and reproductive health and rights and Guttmacher’s mission
