Reproductive Health Matters (RHM) is looking for a Chief Executive to lead the organisation. This is a newly-created position. Previously, the Director (Chief Executive) of the organisation was also the Editor-in-Chief of the RHM Journal, but as RHM’s remit has grown, the Board of Trustees has decided to transform the position into two senior positions, in order to ensure a successful expansion of the organisation’s role in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
The Chief Executive will be a committed leader with the vision to realise RHM’s mission and strategic goals. With strong leadership, management, fundraising and advocacy skills, the Chief Executive will be responsible for leading RHM with a strategic vision on the basis of extensive experience in the field of SRHR.

REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH MATTERS
Reproductive Health Matters (RHM) is a non-governmental organisation promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) globally. It aims to generate knowledge and disseminate information on critical areas of SRHR, build capacity in rights-based knowledge generation, forge links between research and the elaboration of laws, policies and services, and engage in global political processes that have an impact on SRHR.
At the heart of RHM’s work is an international journal of the same name Reproductive Health Matters – referred to as the RHM Journal). The RHM Journal is a multidisciplinary, open-access, peer-reviewed international journal that explores emerging, neglected and marginalised issues across the field of SRHR. the RHM Journal aims to publish original and contemporary research, particularly from a human rights perspective, that can help inform the development of policies, laws and services to fulfil the rights and meet the sexual and reproductive health needs of people of all ages, gender identities and sexual orientations. It also publishes policy analysis and reports of experiences in service delivery and SRHR activism with the aim of highlighting multiple perspectives, acknowledging differences, and searching for new forms of consensus.
RHM as an organisation, however, is more than a journal. It creates and participates in spaces that motivate improvements in research, policy, services and practice; it contributes to capacity building in knowledge generation and inspires new rights-based thinking and action in the field of SRHR through various strategic approaches, and through multi-disciplinary global and local partnerships.
RHM has a presence all over the world through collaborating partners. The organisation is registered in the UK with a secretariat in London and staff based also in Geneva and Cape Town. The current staff positions include an Editor-in-Chief, a Managing Editor, an Administrative Manager, a Communications Manager and a Finance Manager. Editorial support is also provided by Associate Editors and a voluntary Editorial Advisory Board. RHM works with regional partners in most regions to produce seven language versions of the journal. It also works with partner organisations to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will provide leadership and strong strategic direction for RHM as a UK charity with an international mission. The Chief Executive works in close collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief, and reports to the RHM Board of Trustees.
The Chief Executive has responsibility for the following areas of work.
Management of RHM as an organisation
- Manage RHM as an organisation in line with its vision and mission, goals and objectives;
- Work closely and collaboratively with the Editor-in-Chief who has the overall responsibility and editorial oversight of the RHM Journal;
- Provide oversight to the financial management, working with the Finance Manager to develop and manage budgets and ensure best practice across financial and all other policies and procedures;
- Manage staff in collaboration with the Editor-in-Chief; oversee recruitment and deployment of staff and consultants to meet the needs of the organisation; providing opportunities for training, professional and career development, and supporting, supervising and appraising RHM staff;
- Coordinate collaboration with regional and international partners;
- Collaborate with the Editor-in-Chief to manage RHM’s Editorial Advisory Board in the support and promotion of RHM’s activities, including the journal;
- Collaborate with the Editor-in-Chief in the management of RHM’s mentorship programme;
- Represent t
he organisation in various forums.
Strategic planning and implementation
- Manage and coordinate the further development and implementation of RHM’s strategy as “more than a journal”, including the development of progressive approaches in connecting evidence-informed research, knowledge generation and dissemination to policy, programming and advocacy;
- Work with the communications team to increase and measure RHM’s reach and impact;
- Engage in dialogues on SRHR through attending international/regional technical, policy and advocacy meetings and conferences;
- Provide strategic direction and innovation to increase RHM’s reach and reputation; plan and promote new activities that will expand the impact of RHM;
- Identify and develop new strategic partnerships and collaboration in the global SRHR movement and related fields.
- Conduct and coordinate effective fundraising to ensure a sustained and diversified funding base that will support RHM as an organisation, including the RHM Journal and its “more-than-a-journal” activities.
Monitoring and evaluation
- Conduct strategic planning, alongside the development and implementation of a monitoring and evaluation system to assess progress in achieving the current and expanded goals of the organisation.
- Ensure that RHM continues to meet the highest standards of governance and relevant statutory requirements as a UK charity;
- Make regular joint reports with the Editor-in-Chief to the Board of Trustees on the functioning of the organisation.
- Coordinate effective accountability and reporting to funders.
RHM is looking for an experienced Chief Executive who is a passionate advocate and expert in the field of SRHR at a global level, and who has the vision and drive to take RHM forward both as a journal and as an organisation.
Applicants should have the following profile:
(a) International leadership experience and skills
- At least 15 years of experience – track record of leadership, and advocacy in the field of sexual and reproductive health and rights internationally;
- Post-graduate degree in a field relevant to sexual and reproductive health and rights;
- Track record in fundraising with necessary skills and experience;
- A comprehensive understanding of SRHR issues from a global and local perspective;
- Experience of strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation of organisational work.
- Proven track record of working internationally, and experience of working in the “global south” and knowledge of the issues affecting various key and vulnerable populations;
- Ability to identify opportunities for RHM to contribute to, and shape, current debates in SRHR;
- Good knowledge of, and working relationships with, other organisations (governmental, non-governmental and United Nations agencies) working in the SRHR field.
- Fluent English-speaker with excellent communication and writing skills.
(b) Management experience and skills
- Ability to lead a diverse team, work consensually and collaboratively, support staff and achieve ambitious goals;
- Good task- and time-management skills including effective delegation;
- Ability to work to time and to budget on projects;Ability to work with diverse stakeholders and demonstrate political astuteness;
- Strong problem solving skills;
- Excellent communication and organisational representation skills;
- Integrity and a commitment to personal and professional excellence.
- Willingness and ability to travel internationally, with regular travel to London office (if based out of London).

SALARY AND BENEFITS
This position will be offered initially as a fixed two-year contract with the opportunity to renew it at the end of the two-year term, funding permitting.
The position is currently part-time (60%); depending on the growth and needs of the organisation, and availability of funding, the position may be extended to 80% or 100%.
The successful candidate may be based in the UK, or outside the UK; in both cases regular international travel and regular travel to RHM’s London office will be required. A competitive salary will be offered to the right candidate, commensurate with experience.
