CHOICE for Youth & Sexuality (CHOICE) is a professional organization led by young people between the ages of 16 and 29. CHOICE actively promotes and supports the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) of young people globally, as well as meaningful youth participation in this field. We do this through two main programs: as part of our Youth Leadership Program, CHOICE supports and trains African and Asian youth organizations who advocate for SRHR. Within the International Advocacy Program, we influence policies and decision-making processes on an international level, for example by advocating at the United Nations conferences in New York. The board

The board is the governing body of CHOICE. The board shares the vision of CHOICE and carries this vision out, both externally and internally. The CHOICE board has the final responsibility for the development, execution, continuity and monitoring of thelong-term strategic plan and yearly work plan in collaboration with the Executive Director, staff and volunteers. The main responsibilities of the board include designing and implementing CHOICE strategies, overseeing budget and planning, being the employer of staff, performing ad hoc tasks, fundraising and networking. The overall duties consist of board meetings (once every 3 weeks), general meetings (once every 6 weeks), Advisory Board meetings (once every 4 months) and working on the resulting points of action on a continuous basis. The hours you work for CHOICE vary per week but there’s an average of 10 to 12 hours. To reserve the continuity within the organization, we are looking for board members who are positioned from September 2018 to September 2020.

CHOICE is looking for: three enthusiastic, new board members

The different portfolio’s that are foreseen are described shortly below. The board consists of five board members. For the coming year, three positions are up for motivations. We are looking for two general board members and a secretary. The different portfolios that we foresee are described shortly below.


Your role

As the Secretary tasks include:
• Make the agenda for the BM;
• Write the minutes for the board meetings and the general meetings;
• Write the board updates for the GM;
• Are responsible for properly archiving board documents;
• Being a sparring partner for staff;
• Network for the board.

As the general board member tasks can include:
• Monitor and manage the advocacy strategy;
• Being the guiding board member for activism events;
• Monitor the volunteer policy;
• Manage the alumni network;
• Are responsible for member management and member involvement (team
• Being a sparring partner for staff;
• Network for the board.


What do we offer?

As a board member you have the chance to grow professionally and built a strong network. A board member does receive a small compensation, expenses that he/she makes are compensated and there is the possibility to attend trainings for the purpose of either personal or organizational development.


What do we expect from you?

As a board member you fully support the charter of CHOICE and you see young people / volunteers as equal partners. You are under the age of 28 and you have a college/academic level of working and thinking. You have good knowledge of CHOICE and its long-term strategy. You have ambitions for yourself and the organisation and are motivated to help CHOICE grow with your efforts and ideas.

Furthermore, we will be looking for the following key competencies:

• Interest in governing an organisation;
• Excellent communication skills;
• Stress-resilient;
• Teamplayer, but able to work independent;
• Knowledge of international development cooperation;
• Knowledge of SRHR;
• Flexible and willing to occasionally work in evenings and weekends;
• Excellent knowledge of English, and preferably also Dutch;
• Resident of the Netherlands.

There will be two rounds of interviews held in evenings of the 29th and 30th of May (round 1: interview) and the 8th of June (round 2: case). On June 28th, the application committee will present their proposal for the new board to the General Meeting of the organization after which the final appointment will take place. You also need to be available from the 17th until the 19th of August 2018 for your first Board Weekend.
